In the 1960s, Breitling made an impression with the SuperOcean Slow Motion. At that time, deep-sea diving was a new trend. Timing is crucial in diving, especially the number of minutes, not necessarily every second. For this iconic watch, Breitling eliminated any unnecessary information on the dial. Therefore, a date indication is not found on these models. In addition, a high-contrast dial ring was added with the crucial minute indication. The subtle indexes were replaced by large luminous numerals.
The most important step, however, was to drop the second hand. Divers do not need this. Instead, Breitling introduced the revolutionary minute chronograph. This was called “Slow Motion”. It takes an hour for this hand to go around the dial.
